Traffic Stop Takes a Dark Turn When Cops Open Woman’s Trunk
A Routine Traffic Stop Takes an Unexpected Turn
What begins as a routine traffic stop in Essex, Maryland, on July 28, 2021, quickly develops into a disturbing investigation. Officers had stopped a woman for speeding and discovered additional issues involving the vehicle, including fake temporary tags, an unregistered vehicle, and the driver's lack of a license.
As officers prepared to have the vehicle towed, the woman began removing belongings from the trunk.
Officers Notice a Strange Smell
The situation changed when officers noticed a strong odor coming from the vehicle. The woman reportedly explained that the smell came from dirty clothes and blankets because she had been living out of the car.
Officers were not convinced and began looking more closely at items being removed from the trunk. One suitcase was wrapped in layers of plastic and blankets, drawing particular attention from police.
“I’m About to Show You”
The bodycam footage captures the tense conversation as officers repeatedly ask the woman to open the suitcase. She continues explaining that it contains dirty blankets and items that had been sitting in the vehicle for months.
An officer eventually begins helping cut through the layers of plastic. The moment the contents become visible, the atmosphere changes dramatically.
The woman then suddenly runs from the scene, while an officer reacts with visible shock and another officer moves to chase her.
Officers Discover the Horrifying Truth
According to court records and reporting from the Baltimore Sun, police discovered the remains of two children inside the vehicle. They were identified as 7-year-old Joshlyn Johnson and her 5-year-old brother, Larry O'Neil.
The children were the woman's niece and nephew. Investigators later determined that both deaths were homicides, although the circumstances surrounding their deaths were investigated separately from the initial traffic stop.
The Woman Is Taken Into Custody
After attempting to flee, the woman was caught by officers and taken into custody. Detectives were called to the scene as the traffic stop became a major criminal investigation.
The case eventually went before a Baltimore County court. In August 2024, Nicole Michelle Johnson pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree child abuse resulting in death.
A Traffic Stop That Revealed a Much Bigger Case
The incident demonstrates how an ordinary traffic violation can sometimes lead investigators toward information they could not have anticipated. What began with a speeding stop and vehicle-related violations turned into the discovery of two children's remains and a homicide investigation.
The bodycam footage captures the moment officers' suspicions grow, the trunk is opened, and the encounter changes completely.
