Tenant Shoots at Suspected Burglars Disguised as Maintenance Workers

A Suspicious Visitor Appears at the Door

What looked like a routine maintenance visit quickly turned into a terrifying confrontation at a Dallas apartment complex. On August 19, 2023, a man later identified by police as 30-year-old Aaron Contreras approached an Oak Cliff apartment and claimed he was there to check the air-conditioning filter. The resident, Ethan Rodriguez, was inside and communicated with the visitor through his doorbell camera.

Rodriguez immediately became suspicious. He told the man that nobody was home, even though he was actually inside the apartment. According to Rodriguez, the visitor's clothing and the timing of the supposed maintenance visit did not look like a normal service call.

The Claimed Maintenance Visit Raises Questions

The supposed worker reportedly said he was there to check the apartment's air filters. Rodriguez later explained that this did not make sense to him because previous maintenance workers at the complex had not arrived dressed in the same way.

Instead of opening the door, Rodriguez continued communicating through the digital doorbell system. That decision became significant only moments later, when the first man left and then returned with another person.

Two Men Return to the Apartment

According to police and the available doorbell footage, Contreras returned with another man. The second individual was wearing a mask, while Contreras was reportedly armed with a handgun.

The two men then began attempting to force their way into the apartment. Video showed them taking turns kicking the front door in an apparent effort to break through it. Rodriguez was still inside with his brother and could see what was happening through the security camera.

The Door Becomes the Only Barrier

At this point, the situation had changed completely. What had initially been presented as a maintenance visit had become an apparent attempted break-in, according to police.

Rodriguez later told reporters that he saw the armed man attempting to enter and became concerned for his own safety and that of his brother. He retrieved a firearm as the suspects continued trying to force open the door.

Gunfire Erupts in the Hallway

Rodriguez eventually opened fire through the apartment door. Dallas police said he fired 13 rounds, while one of the suspects fired two rounds in response before both men fled.

Investigators later found 13 shell casings from inside the apartment, along with two rounds that had been fired into the apartment. Reports also noted that some of Rodriguez's bullets struck the exterior wall near a neighboring unit. Fortunately, no one was injured during the exchange.

The Suspects Run From the Scene

The gunfire caused the attempted break-in to collapse almost immediately. The two men fled the apartment complex, leaving investigators to determine exactly who they were and how the confrontation began.

The doorbell footage became an important part of the investigation. Because the encounter had been recorded, investigators were able to examine the men's movements and use information from the video to help identify one of the suspects.

Police Identify One Suspect

The video circulated widely after the incident, eventually generating tips that helped investigators identify the man posing as the maintenance worker. Dallas police arrested Aaron Contreras on August 21, two days after the attempted break-in.

Contreras was charged with aggravated assault, deadly conduct, and attempted burglary of a habitation. Police said the second man, who appeared in the footage wearing a mask, had not been identified at the time of the reports.

No One Was Seriously Injured

Despite the number of shots fired, the confrontation did not result in a reported physical injury. That outcome was especially significant because the shooting happened in an apartment complex, where other residents could have been nearby.

The incident also highlighted the risks associated with firing through a closed door. Rodriguez later acknowledged that he was worried about where the bullets could travel, particularly because neighboring apartments were nearby.

The Resident Leaves the Apartment

The experience left Rodriguez deeply shaken. He told CBS Texas that the incident was frightening and that it took him some time to process what had happened before contacting police.

Rodriguez and his family subsequently decided to leave the apartment. He said he was grateful that his wife and seven-month-old baby were not present during the confrontation.

Doorbell Cameras Capture the Entire Confrontation

One of the most important elements of this case was the security footage. Instead of relying entirely on eyewitness accounts, investigators and the public could see the encounter unfold through the apartment's doorbell camera.

The footage reportedly captured the initial conversation, the return of the two men, the attempt to kick down the door, and the exchange of gunfire. It later became widely circulated online and played a role in generating information that led police to Contreras.

A Fake Maintenance Call Turns Into a Shootout

The incident demonstrates how quickly an apparently ordinary visit can become a dangerous confrontation. The men allegedly used the appearance of a maintenance visit to approach the apartment, but the situation escalated after they returned and attempted to force their way inside.

For the resident, the security camera provided a critical view of what was happening outside his door. Within minutes, a suspicious maintenance request had turned into an attempted break-in followed by an exchange of gunfire.

The case ultimately resulted in an arrest and multiple criminal charges against one of the suspects. The second suspect remained unidentified in the reporting available at the time.
