1. HE DROVE HUNDREDS OF MILES TO HIS BROTHER'S HOME
On April 27, 2023, 66-year-old Jeffrey Roberts arrived at his estranged brother Scott Roberts' home in North Ogden, Utah.
Jeffrey had reportedly driven from Long Beach, California. Scott and his wife, Jodi, were inside having dinner when Jeffrey approached their front door.
At first, nothing about the encounter appeared immediately dangerous.
Then Scott opened the door.
According to footage released by the Weber County Attorney's Office, the brothers exchanged a few words about their mother.
Then, roughly 15 seconds into the conversation, Jeffrey pulled a handgun from his jacket and opened fire. (standard.net)
2. THE CONVERSATION LASTED ONLY SECONDS
The Ring camera captured the chilling sequence from the front porch.
Jeffrey initially appeared to be speaking normally with Scott. But while they were talking, his hand moved toward his jacket.
Moments later, gunshots erupted.
Scott was fatally wounded, while Jodi was also shot and injured inside the home. She survived the attack. (KSL.com)
The footage would later become a crucial part of the investigation.
3. HE LEAVES — THEN COMES BACK WITH A SHOTGUN
After the initial shooting, Jeffrey walked away from the house.
But he wasn't finished.
Doorbell footage showed him returning to the residence carrying a 12-gauge shotgun and a large bag. Authorities later said he also had a 9mm handgun and extensive ammunition. (standard.net)
At this point, neighbors had already heard the gunfire and were calling 911.
But officers were still on their way.
4. THEN THE HOUSE STARTS FILLING WITH SMOKE
Investigators said Jeffrey used road flares to start a fire inside the home.
As the situation developed, smoke and flames became visible from the house.
Jeffrey was also captured on the doorbell footage leaving the home while apparently talking on a cellphone.
The scene was now becoming both a shooting investigation and a rapidly developing house fire. (standard.net)
Meanwhile, police officers were arriving at the scene.
And they had no idea what was waiting for them.
5. OFFICERS ARRIVE TO A BURNING HOME
North Ogden officers responded after neighbors reported the gunshots.
When they arrived, they encountered a burning house and an armed suspect.
According to the Weber County Attorney's Office, Jeffrey opened fire on officers as they arrived. Three officers returned fire. (standard.net)
One responding officer took cover behind a stone mailbox structure near the home as rounds struck the area.
The gunfight had begun.
6. THE BODYCAM CAPTURES THE FINAL MOMENTS
Police bodycam footage shows officers exchanging gunfire with Jeffrey as he moved outside the burning residence.
Authorities said Jeffrey continued firing toward officers.
The exchange lasted only a short time before Jeffrey was struck and collapsed near the front steps.
He died at the scene. (standard.net)
The officers then had to deal with another immediate danger:
The house was still burning.
7. OFFICERS DISCOVER THE SCALE OF THE THREAT
As officers secured the area, investigators began documenting the amount of ammunition Jeffrey had brought with him.
Authorities said he was carrying a 9mm handgun, 23 fully loaded handgun magazines, a 12-gauge shotgun and more than 150 shotgun shells. (standard.net)
The investigation also found evidence that bullets had struck nearby property during the exchange.
A police vehicle and a neighbor's garage were among the locations reportedly hit by gunfire. (standard.net)
8. THE BULLET DAMAGE SHOWS HOW DANGEROUS THE SHOOTOUT WAS
Investigators documented multiple bullet impacts around the scene.
The stone mailbox used as cover by one officer had been struck, while a nearby garage door reportedly had more than a dozen apparent bullet holes.
The shooting had not been confined to the people directly involved.
Rounds had traveled through the surrounding neighborhood while officers attempted to stop Jeffrey.
9. THE SURVIVING WIFE WAS FOUND INSIDE
Once the immediate gunfire ended, officers still had to determine whether anyone remained inside the burning home.
Jodi Roberts had survived being shot.
Bodycam footage captured officers dealing with heavy smoke while attempting to reach the residence. She was eventually removed from the home and taken for medical treatment. Her injuries were described by authorities as survivable. (Law & Crime)
Scott, however, did not survive.
The shooting had claimed the life of one brother, seriously injured his wife, and ended with the other brother dead in a police shootout.
10. THE INVESTIGATION REVEALED A FAMILY DISPUTE
In the months after the shooting, the Weber County Attorney's Office released additional findings.
Investigators said the violence appeared connected to a long-running dispute involving the family's estate. Jeffrey and Scott had been estranged, and authorities later described conflict surrounding their mother's estate. (standard.net)
A subsequent review by the Weber County Attorney's Office concluded that the three officers who returned fire were justified in using deadly force. (standard.net)
The case left the North Ogden community shaken. A week later, residents gathered for a vigil honoring Scott and supporting Jodi as she recovered.
