PORTLAND SECURITY GUARD WHO SHOT AND KILLED MAN IN FIGHT GETS 25 YEARS IN PRISON — FATAL CONFRONTATION ENDS IN LIFE SENTENCE
A CONFRONTATION BETWEEN A PRIVATE SECURITY GUARD AND A MAN IN A PORTLAND PARKING LOT ENDED WITH A DEADLY SHOOTING AND A LIFE SENTENCE. Logan Conrad Gimbel, a private security guard, was convicted in connection with the fatal shooting of 49-year-old Freddy Nelson at a Lowe’s parking lot near Delta Park in North Portland on May 29, 2021. A Multnomah County jury later found Gimbel guilty of SECOND-DEGREE MURDER WITH A FIREARM and additional weapons-related offenses.
THE CASE CENTERED ON A RAPIDLY ESCALATING CONFRONTATION in the shopping-center parking lot. According to prosecutors, Gimbel confronted Nelson during a dispute that ultimately resulted in Nelson being shot while inside his truck. The circumstances surrounding the encounter became a major focus of the criminal case, including questions about the actions of the security guard and the events immediately preceding the shooting.
Following the trial, Judge Christopher Marshall sentenced Gimbel to LIFE IN PRISON WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF PAROLE AFTER 25 YEARS. The sentence followed the jury's murder conviction and its findings on unlawful use of a weapon and unlawful use of mace. The jury acquitted him of one count of recklessly endangering another person.
THE CASE HIGHLIGHTS HOW QUICKLY A PRIVATE SECURITY ENCOUNTER CAN ESCALATE INTO DEADLY VIOLENCE. It also brought significant attention to the responsibilities and legal authority of armed private security personnel. Official records show that the criminal prosecution focused specifically on Gimbel's actions and the fatal shooting of Nelson.
The available evidence and courtroom proceedings provide different perspectives on what happened during the confrontation. Gimbel's defense maintained that he believed he was acting in self-defense, while the prosecution presented the shooting as criminal conduct. The jury ultimately convicted him of second-degree murder and related offenses.
THE SENTENCE MARKED THE END OF THE CRIMINAL CASE'S TRIAL PHASE, BUT THE INCIDENT CONTINUED TO RECEIVE PUBLIC ATTENTION because of the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the involvement of a private security guard.
