POLICE SHOT A 17-YEAR-OLD TEEN WHO WAS JUST EATING A BURGER INSIDE HIS CAR

A routine evening at a fast-food restaurant turned into a shocking police shooting when 17-YEAR-OLD ERIK CANTU WAS SHOT WHILE SITTING INSIDE HIS CAR EATING A HAMBURGER in a McDonald’s parking lot in San Antonio, Texas. The incident occurred on October 2, 2022, and body-camera footage later brought widespread attention to the confrontation.

THE ENCOUNTER BEGAN WITH A POLICE OFFICER APPROACHING THE VEHICLE. Former San Antonio police officer James Brennand told dispatch that he recognized the vehicle from an earlier incident and believed it might have been stolen. He approached Cantu’s car and ordered the teenager to get out. According to reports and released footage, Cantu then put the vehicle in reverse while the officer was standing nearby, after which Brennand opened fire.

THE TEENAGER WAS SERIOUSLY WOUNDED as multiple rounds were fired toward the vehicle. A female passenger was also inside the car but was not injured. Cantu was hospitalized for weeks before eventually being released, according to subsequent reporting.

One of the most significant developments came when AUTHORITIES CONFIRMED THE VEHICLE WAS NOT STOLEN. The officer had reportedly believed the vehicle was connected to an earlier encounter, partly because of a license-plate discrepancy, but investigators later determined that the car Cantu was driving was not stolen.

THE OFFICER WAS FIRED AND FACED CRIMINAL CHARGES following the shooting. Prosecutors later obtained an indictment charging Brennand with aggravated assault by a public servant and attempted murder. The case subsequently moved through the court system, with later reports noting delays in the trial proceedings.

The incident has become a significant case involving POLICE USE OF FORCE, OFFICER DECISION-MAKING, AND THE DANGERS OF MISIDENTIFYING A VEHICLE. Body-camera footage, witness accounts, physical evidence, and official investigations all play an important role in establishing what happened during those critical seconds.

A TEENAGER EATING A BURGER, A POLICE ENCOUNTER, AND A SUDDEN BURST OF GUNFIRE ultimately became the subject of a major criminal investigation and court case, raising lasting questions about how the confrontation unfolded and whether the officer’s actions were justified under department policy and the law.
