Police Open Fire as Man Uses Tractor to Attack Officers
A Routine Call Turns Into an Armed Standoff
A police response in rural Clackamas County, Oregon, quickly developed into a tense standoff after authorities said a man opened fire on tree workers near his property. The incident happened on August 29, 2026, on South Rocky Bluff Lane near Oregon City. Witnesses initially reported that the man had fired roughly 20 rounds toward the workers. No workers were injured.
Officers Surround the Property
Deputies responded to the area and began securing the surrounding property. Authorities also evacuated nearby residents and used drones to monitor the suspect's location while tactical officers and crisis negotiators responded.
Investigators later said the gunfire continued during the standoff, with the suspect allegedly firing additional rounds toward a sheriff's office drone. Authorities ultimately estimated that more than 200 rounds were fired during the entire incident.
The Tractor Becomes Part of the Standoff
As officers watched the property, the suspect was reportedly seen driving a compact tractor near the residence. According to the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, he was using the tractor to knock down trees and appeared to be creating a barricade.
The tractor created another serious challenge for officers. A large vehicle operating near a residence can restrict movement and make it harder for tactical teams to safely approach the suspect.
SWAT Moves In
The situation reached its critical moment when the suspect became separated from his rifle while operating the tractor. Authorities said this created an opportunity for the SWAT team to move.
Video released by the sheriff's office shows an armored SWAT vehicle moving toward the tractor and pinning it against the home. Tactical officers then exited the armored vehicle and moved in to take the suspect into custody.
The Arrest Happens Quickly
According to authorities, the suspect was taken into custody shortly before 3:45 p.m. He was identified as 53-year-old Erik Gordon Shunn.
Shunn was treated at the scene before being taken to a hospital for evaluation. His mother was inside the residence during the standoff but was not injured. Authorities also reported that none of the tree workers or nearby residents were hurt.
Serious Charges Follow
Shunn was arraigned on charges including attempted second-degree murder, attempted first-degree assault, reckless endangerment, unlawful use of a weapon, menacing, unlawful possession of firearms, attempted first-degree criminal mischief, and interfering with a peace officer. He was being held without bail, while the investigation remained ongoing.
A Standoff Captured on Camera
The released footage gives viewers an unusual look at how law enforcement dealt with a suspect using heavy equipment during an armed standoff. Rather than allowing the tractor to continue moving around the property, SWAT used an armored vehicle to stop and pin it, creating an opportunity to approach the suspect.
The incident also shows how quickly a dispute involving nearby property can develop into a major police operation when gunfire is reported. With drones overhead, tactical officers surrounding the property, and a tractor being used near the residence, officers had to manage several threats at the same time.
