Police K9 Takes Down Suspect on Camera

A routine traffic stop in Florida quickly turned into a foot pursuit after deputies attempted to stop a vehicle believed to be stolen. What followed was captured on dramatic bodycam footage, showing a police K9 being deployed to locate and apprehend the fleeing suspect. According to reports from WPTV, the incident occurred in Spring Hill and involved Pasco County Deputy Nick Carmack and his K9 partner, Shep.

SUSPECT RUNS AFTER CRASHING THE VEHICLE

Deputies reportedly attempted to pull over a vehicle suspected of being stolen. Instead of remaining at the scene, the driver fled from the traffic stop. The suspect eventually drove into a driveway, where the vehicle crashed through a fence.

THE VEHICLE WAS DAMAGED, BUT THE DRIVER WAS NOT READY TO GIVE UP. HE LEFT THE CRASHED CAR AND RAN FROM THE SCENE, TURNING THE TRAFFIC STOP INTO A FOOT PURSUIT.

Authorities later reported that a 19-month-old child had been inside the vehicle. Deputies also searched the area for another person who reportedly fled from the crashed car.

K9 SHEP JOINS THE PURSUIT

With the suspect running through the area, Deputy Carmack released his K9 partner, Shep. Bodycam footage captured the deputy following the dog as Shep moved quickly across the property and over a fence.

The K9 was able to track down the fleeing suspect. WITHIN MOMENTS, SHEP CAUGHT UP TO THE MAN AND TOOK HIM TO THE GROUND, ALLOWING THE DEPUTY TO MOVE IN AND PLACE HIM IN HANDCUFFS.

The footage demonstrates how quickly a pursuit on foot can change once a trained K9 is deployed. Rather than continuing the chase on his own, the deputy was able to use his K9 partner to locate the suspect and bring the pursuit to an end.

SUSPECT TAKEN INTO CUSTODY

The suspect, identified in the report as 28-year-old James Miller, was medically evaluated after the K9 apprehension. He was subsequently arrested on charges that included child abuse, along with other offenses connected to the incident.

THE ENTIRE ENCOUNTER SHOWS HOW A ROUTINE VEHICLE STOP CAN ESCALATE INTO A FAST-MOVING FOOT PURSUIT — AND HOW A POLICE K9 CAN PLAY A CENTRAL ROLE IN LOCATING AND APPREHENDING A FLEEING SUSPECT.

From the initial traffic stop to the vehicle crash and final K9 takedown, the bodycam footage gives viewers a close look at the sequence of events and the coordination between the deputy and his four-legged partner.
