Man With Gun and Drugs Fights Police After Refusing to Get Out of Car
A routine traffic stop can change quickly when officers discover something unexpected inside a vehicle. What begins with questions about the driver can turn into a much more serious confrontation once a weapon or suspected drugs become part of the investigation.
In a documented 2026 Washington case, deputies stopped a man after observing him driving nearly 70 mph in a 35-mph zone. During the stop, the driver briefly opened his glove box, revealing a handgun. When deputies ordered him out of the vehicle, the situation immediately became more difficult.
THE TRAFFIC STOP TAKES A SERIOUS TURN
Deputies initially approached the vehicle as part of a speeding investigation. The driver had been traveling at an extremely high speed for the posted limit, giving officers a reason to take a closer look at the situation.
During the interaction, the driver opened the glove box. Deputies reportedly saw a BLACK HANDGUN inside.
That discovery immediately changed the nature of the stop. Officers now had to consider both the firearm and the driver's behavior while deciding how to safely remove him from the vehicle.
HE REFUSES TO GET OUT
Deputies instructed the man to exit the vehicle.
Instead of complying, he reportedly started the vehicle and attempted to reverse. Officers then moved in to prevent him from leaving and began physically removing him from the car.
A struggle followed as deputies pulled him onto the ground and attempted to place him in handcuffs.
THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES AFTER THE ARREST
Even after deputies managed to handcuff the man, the situation was not over.
According to investigators, the suspect managed to break free and RUN AWAY WHILE STILL HANDCUFFED. Deputies chased him for roughly 100 yards before catching him and bringing him back to the ground.
The encounter had now developed from a speeding stop into a physical struggle, an attempted escape, and a second arrest.
POLICE FIND DRUGS AND MORE EVIDENCE
After the suspect was secured, investigators searched him and the vehicle.
Authorities reported finding cocaine, opioids, methamphetamine, packaging materials, a digital scale, and $2,184 in cash. A later search of the vehicle reportedly uncovered additional suspected drugs, empty baggies, three EBT cards, and another person's driver's license.
The firearm discovered during the original stop also became a major part of the investigation.
A ROUTINE STOP BECOMES A MAJOR ARREST
The sequence developed rapidly:
SPEEDING STOP → HANDGUN DISCOVERED → REFUSES TO EXIT → PHYSICAL STRUGGLE → HANDCUFFED → ESCAPES → RECAPTURED → DRUGS AND FIREARM RECOVERED
The case shows how quickly officers can move from a routine traffic investigation to a high-risk arrest when a weapon is discovered and the occupant refuses to comply.
According to the report, the 38-year-old suspect was ultimately taken to the Pierce County Jail and faced multiple charges related to the incident.
FINAL THOUGHTS
The most dramatic part of the encounter wasn't the original speeding violation—it was what officers discovered once they began investigating the vehicle.
A visible handgun, refusal to exit, a physical struggle, and an attempted escape turned the traffic stop into a much more serious police operation. The subsequent search also revealed suspected narcotics and other evidence that expanded the case beyond the original traffic violation.
