Lexington PD and Cleveland County Sheriff's Office feud

LEXINGTON POLICE DEPARTMENT AND CLEVELAND COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE CLASHED IN A HEATED CONFRONTATION that was captured on body-camera footage, bringing long-standing tensions between the two law-enforcement agencies into public view. The incident unfolded during a police operation involving a wanted suspect and quickly escalated into a tense exchange between officers and sheriff’s deputies.

According to reports, CLEVELAND COUNTY DEPUTIES RESPONDED TO A SWAT-RELATED CALL IN LEXINGTON after private investigators and bond agents requested assistance in locating a wanted former Tulsa police officer who was reportedly considered armed and dangerous. Lexington officers said they were unaware of the operation, creating confusion when Sheriff Chris Amason and his deputies arrived in the city.

The situation became more heated after A LEXINGTON POLICE OFFICER STOPPED THE SHERIFF WHILE HE WAS DRIVING TO THE OPERATION. When the officer learned that a SWAT response was underway, he followed the sheriff to the staging area. Lexington Police Chief Ronnie Johnson then arrived and questioned deputies about why his department had not been notified.

BODY-CAMERA FOOTAGE CAPTURED THE ESCALATING ARGUMENT, with officers and deputies exchanging angry words before the confrontation became physical and involved pushing and shoving. Sheriff Amason eventually stepped in as tensions continued to rise, ordering both sides to back away from the confrontation.

The dispute also exposed A LONGSTANDING STRAIN BETWEEN THE TWO AGENCIES. The Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office attributed some of that tension to a previous investigation involving allegations of animal abuse and the treatment of dogs within Lexington city limits. Lexington Police Chief Ronnie Johnson disputed aspects of the sheriff’s office’s characterization and said his department had requested an investigation into the animal shelter.

THE INCIDENT RAISES QUESTIONS ABOUT COMMUNICATION, JURISDICTION, AND COOPERATION BETWEEN LOCAL LAW-ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES. This report examines the body-camera footage, the events surrounding the SWAT response, the competing accounts from both departments, and the history of tension that contributed to the confrontation.

As officials reviewed the incident, THE FULL STORY DEPENDS ON BODY-CAMERA EVIDENCE, OFFICIAL STATEMENTS, AND THE INVESTIGATION into what happened that day.
