Indiana Murder Suspect Flees GSP — Truck Goes Airborne During Chase
What began as a planned felony traffic stop in Georgia quickly turned into a dangerous high-speed pursuit when a wanted murder suspect refused to stop. Georgia State Patrol troopers were assisting U.S. Marshals in locating an Indiana murder suspect when the driver suddenly accelerated away.
FELONY STOP TURNS INTO A HIGH-SPEED CHASE
On October 20, 2022, U.S. Marshals requested assistance from Georgia State Patrol in locating 36-year-old Irvin M. Roberson, who was wanted in connection with a murder case in Indiana.
Troopers located Roberson driving a 2022 Dodge Ram on GA-20 near Stanley Street. When the trooper activated his emergency lights for a felony traffic stop, Roberson immediately accelerated away.
THE ATTEMPTED TRAFFIC STOP QUICKLY BECAME A FULL-SCALE POLICE PURSUIT.
TROOPERS USE PIT MANEUVERS AS THE DRIVER GOES INTO ONCOMING TRAFFIC
The first PIT maneuver was performed near GA-20 and Stanley Street. The truck appeared to have been disabled, but Roberson managed to keep the vehicle moving and continued westbound.
During the pursuit, the suspect repeatedly crossed the median and drove into lanes carrying oncoming traffic. The dangerous maneuver forced other motorists to react as the pursuit continued.
Troopers attempted a second PIT maneuver near GA-20 and Old Cumming Road, hoping to bring the chase to an end. However, Roberson counter-steered and continued fleeing.
THE TRUCK KEPT MOVING DESPITE TWO PIT ATTEMPTS, WITH THE SUSPECT CONTINUING TO DRIVE AGAINST TRAFFIC.
THE TRUCK GOES AIRBORNE BEFORE THE CRASH
The pursuit covered approximately 6.9 miles. As the vehicles approached GA-20 and Samples Drive, Roberson returned to the westbound lanes and passed stopped traffic before running a red light.
He attempted to cross the intersection but collided with another vehicle traveling south on Samples Drive.
The Dodge Ram came to an uncontrolled stop, bringing the vehicle portion of the pursuit to an end. THE CRASH RESULTED IN ONE REPORTED MINOR INJURY.
THE SUSPECT RUNS — BUT HAS NOWHERE TO GO
Roberson immediately abandoned the damaged truck and ran toward a nearby Walgreens parking lot.
Troopers followed him on foot. At one point, officers became concerned that he might attempt to return to the truck and retrieve a weapon. Before that could happen, Roberson turned toward the pursuing officers and eventually laid face down on the ground.
A trooper placed him in handcuffs while another officer provided less-lethal cover. U.S. Marshals then arrived and took Roberson into custody.
AFTER THE LONG CHASE, THE WANTED SUSPECT WAS FINALLY CAPTURED WITHOUT THE FOOT PURSUIT ESCALATING INTO A SHOOTING.
