Husband Takes 3 Children After Divorce Papers — Then Rams Into Police Cars
🚨 POLICE BODYCAM: DIVORCE DISPUTE TURNS INTO A DEADLY CONFRONTATION IN GEORGIA
A DOMESTIC DISTURBANCE, A DESPERATE 911 CALL, THREE MISSING CHILDREN AND A TRUCK RACING TOWARD POLICE — ALL WITHIN A MATTER OF HOURS.
On May 19, 2020, deputies in MACON, GEORGIA, responded to a disturbing domestic incident that quickly developed into a deadly police encounter.
According to investigators, 30-year-old Keith Young was accused of tying up his wife inside their home and leaving with their three children. His wife managed to free herself and ran to a nearby neighbor's house, where she called 911 for help.
THE 911 CALL THAT STARTED THE POLICE RESPONSE
When deputies arrived, they began gathering information from the woman and assessing the situation.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation reported that the initial call came in at approximately 5:44 P.M. Deputies were told that Young had tied up his wife and taken the children from the residence. The woman had escaped and reached a nearby home on Karlee Dawn Drive.
At that point, deputies were dealing with a potential domestic violence incident as well as a possible child-abduction situation.
THE CHILDREN WERE MISSING, THE SUSPECT WAS STILL AT LARGE, AND OFFICERS DID NOT KNOW WHAT WOULD HAPPEN NEXT.
A WOMAN ESCAPES AND RUNS FOR HELP
According to the reports, Young's wife managed to escape from the residence and make her way to a neighbor's home.
The incident was later described by authorities as a domestic dispute that had escalated dramatically. News reports said the couple had been going through a divorce, adding another layer to an already volatile situation.
For deputies arriving at the scene, the immediate priority was to protect the woman, locate the children and determine where Young was.
WHAT BEGAN AS A FAMILY CRISIS WAS RAPIDLY BECOMING A LAW-ENFORCEMENT EMERGENCY.
DEPUTIES LEARN THE SUSPECT MAY BE RETURNING
While deputies were still at the location, Young reportedly returned to the neighborhood in a RED FORD F-150.
The GBI said two deputies outside their vehicles saw the truck accelerating toward the patrol vehicles. A third deputy was still inside one of the police vehicles.
Later investigative findings reported that Young accelerated from approximately 21 MPH TO 52 MPH and did not appear to use his brakes as he approached the deputies.
THE TRUCK SLAMS INTO POLICE VEHICLES
Then the situation changed in seconds.
The pickup truck struck a Bibb County Sheriff's patrol vehicle. The impact pushed that vehicle into another patrol car, creating a chain reaction.
The GBI reported that the second patrol vehicle was occupied by a deputy, who was transported to the hospital with NON-LIFE-THREATENING INJURIES and later released. Two other deputies were not injured.
DEPUTIES OPEN FIRE
As the truck moved toward the patrol vehicles, deputies fired several shots at Young.
The GBI stated that two deputies outside their vehicles fired at the truck and struck Young. He was transported to Navicent Health Hospital in Macon, where he was pronounced dead after receiving treatment.
The aftermath can be seen in the bodycam-style imagery associated with the incident: damaged sheriff's vehicles, debris scattered across the roadway and deputies attempting to secure the scene.
A ROUTINE POLICE RESPONSE HAD TURNED INTO A DEADLY VEHICLE ENCOUNTER IN SECONDS.
THREE CHILDREN WERE STILL MISSING
Even after the shooting, deputies faced another urgent problem.
The three children were still unaccounted for.
According to the GBI and local news reports, authorities eventually located the children with Young's family. ALL THREE CHILDREN WERE FOUND SAFE. They were later returned to their mother.
THE INVESTIGATION CONTINUED AFTER THE SHOOTING
Because deputies had used deadly force, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation conducted an independent investigation.
The GBI's initial report was eventually forwarded to the Bibb Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office for review. In June 2020, District Attorney David Cooke announced that the deputies involved would not face charges, concluding that the use of force was justified based on the investigative findings.
The Macon Telegraph reported that investigators also concluded Young had accelerated toward the officers and that evidence indicated he may have fired shots toward deputies and a nearby residence.
WHY BODYCAM FOOTAGE MATTERS
Police bodycam footage can provide an important first-person record of an encounter.
In a case involving a domestic disturbance, a missing-child investigation, a vehicle attack and an officer-involved shooting, THE SEQUENCE OF EVENTS MATTERS.
Body-worn camera footage can help document what officers saw, heard and did during a rapidly developing situation. It can also provide investigators with additional evidence alongside witness statements, physical evidence and other investigative records.
A CASE THAT ESCALATED IN A MATTER OF HOURS
The events of May 19, demonstrate how quickly a domestic disturbance can become a major law-enforcement response.
A 911 CALL LED TO A POLICE RESPONSE. A FAMILY DISPUTE BECAME A SEARCH FOR THREE CHILDREN. A RETURNING VEHICLE CREATED AN IMMEDIATE THREAT TO DEPUTIES. AND WITHIN MOMENTS, THE STREET BECAME A MAJOR CRIME SCENE.
The three children were eventually found safe, while one deputy suffered injuries that were not life-threatening. Keith Young died at the hospital following the shooting.

REAL POLICE ENCOUNTERS — DOCUMENTED ON CAMERA
Cases like this are why POLICE BODYCAM FOOTAGE has become an important part of modern law-enforcement documentation.
