Georgetown Officer Attacked by Wanted Woman During Arrest
A routine patrol in Georgetown, Ohio, quickly turned into a physical struggle when an officer encountered a woman who was already wanted on an active warrant. What followed was captured on police dashcam footage as officers attempted to take her into custody.
OFFICER SPOTS A WANTED WOMAN
On June 28, 2024, Georgetown Patrolman Rammel was conducting routine patrol when he saw a woman walking northbound along US 68 near Hamer Road.
Police identified the woman as Mary McElroy and determined that she had an active warrant. Because officers were aware of her history of violent behavior, Patrolman Rammel requested additional assistance before attempting the arrest.
THE OFFICER KNEW THE ARREST COULD BECOME DIFFICULT AND CALLED FOR BACKUP.
THE ARREST QUICKLY ESCALATES
When Rammel approached McElroy and informed her about the warrant, the situation reportedly became tense. A Brown County Sheriff's Office deputy, identified as Deputy Hardy, arrived and helped move the encounter away from the roadway.
Officers then attempted to gain control of McElroy and place her in restraints.
WHAT STARTED AS A WARRANT ARREST SOON TURNED INTO A PHYSICAL STRUGGLE.
OFFICER INJURED DURING THE STRUGGLE
According to the account of the incident, McElroy fought with the officers during the arrest. Patrolman Rammel sustained cuts and bruises, while his uniform was also damaged. Police also reported that he was spit on during the confrontation.
Despite the resistance, Rammel and Deputy Hardy eventually managed to restrain McElroy and take her into custody.
WOMAN FACES MULTIPLE CHARGES
McElroy was subsequently booked into the Brown County Jail. The reported charges included resisting arrest, obstruction, and assault of a police officer. Patrolman Rammel was treated and released following the incident.
Georgetown officials later specifically commended Patrolman Rammel and Deputy Hardy for their work and teamwork during the June 28 use-of-force incident involving McElroy.
