Fugitives Flee Vermont Deputies
FLORIDA WOMAN ACCUSED OF CHASING 14-YEAR-OLD E-BIKE RIDER WITH SUV
What began as an ordinary evening ride for a teenager in Palm Coast, Florida, allegedly turned into a frightening encounter when an SUV followed him onto a path intended for pedestrians and cyclists.
According to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred on June 7, 2025, along the Pine Lakes Path, a multi-use trail running beside Pine Lakes Parkway. Authorities said a 65-year-old Palm Coast woman, Julia Lynn Kalthof, followed a 14-year-old boy who was riding an electric bicycle.
The encounter eventually resulted in Kalthof's arrest on charges including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill and reckless driving. The allegations described here are accusations; an arrest does not establish guilt.

A ROUTINE E-BIKE RIDE TAKES AN UNEXPECTED TURN
According to investigators, the teenager was riding his e-bike when he realized that an SUV appeared to be following him.
This was not simply another vehicle traveling on the road beside him.
The Sheriff's Office said the SUV entered the Pine Lakes Path, which is designed as a multi-use route for pedestrians and bicyclists rather than ordinary motor-vehicle traffic.
A witness saw what was happening and called 911.
According to the official release, the caller reported seeing the juvenile attempting to wave down passing motorists while the SUV remained approximately six to ten feet behind him.
The situation was serious enough that the witness decided to intervene.
At the intersection of Pine Lakes Parkway and Woodhaven Drive, he positioned his own vehicle in the SUV's path, preventing it from continuing after the teenager. The boy was then able to leave the immediate area.
That intervention would become an important part of the investigation because the witness also collected information that helped deputies identify the vehicle.
THE TEENAGER RECORDED PART OF THE ENCOUNTER
One reason the case attracted significant attention was the existence of video.
The teenager recorded portions of the encounter himself, while another recording was reportedly made by the girlfriend of the witness who intervened.
Those recordings provided investigators with visual evidence of the SUV traveling behind the teenager on the path.
In an interview with WSVN, the teenager was identified as Gaige Ellis, 14. He described the experience as traumatic and said he had previously felt safe riding in the area. He also recalled returning home shaken by what had happened.
The videos transformed what might otherwise have become conflicting accounts into an incident with multiple recorded perspectives.

WHY WAS THE SUV FOLLOWING HIM?
Perhaps the most unusual part of the story is the explanation investigators say Kalthof provided.
According to the Flagler County Sheriff's Office, Kalthof said she was angry because she believed the teenager had been riding his e-bike too fast through the neighborhood.
Authorities said she wanted to find out where he lived so she could speak with his parents.
But investigators alleged that her response to that concern went far beyond simply attempting to have a conversation.
The teenager told deputies that the SUV followed him, that Kalthof screamed at him, and that the vehicle allegedly cut him off and nearly struck him.
FlaglerLive reported that the teenager told investigators he feared for his life as he tried to get away.
The central issue therefore became not simply why the confrontation started, but HOW FAR THE DRIVER ALLEGEDLY WENT IN PURSUING THE TEENAGER.
A WITNESS DECIDES TO INTERVENE
The actions of the passing motorist became one of the most important moments of the incident.
According to investigators, the witness saw the SUV following close behind the e-bike and noticed the teenager attempting to attract help from passing vehicles.
Rather than continuing to drive away, the witness intervened.
He used his own vehicle to block the SUV and stop the pursuit from continuing, according to the Sheriff's Office.
His girlfriend also recorded part of what was happening.
The teenager was then able to get away safely.
This intervention not only brought the immediate pursuit to an end but also provided law enforcement with a witness who could describe what he had observed.
The Sheriff's Office said information provided by the witness helped deputies identify Kalthof and her vehicle.

FROM INVESTIGATION TO ARREST
The case did not end on the night of the encounter.
The Flagler County Sheriff's Office said the incident happened on June 7 and that investigators ultimately obtained an arrest warrant after reviewing the available evidence.
Kalthof was arrested on June 10.
Authorities charged her with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill, a felony allegation, and reckless driving, a misdemeanor allegation. She was additionally cited for driving on the multi-use path.
Local reporting later examined why an arrest did not happen immediately.
The Palm Coast Observer reported that law enforcement initially faced questions about whether the available information established the intent necessary for an aggravated-assault charge. The investigation continued as authorities reviewed statements and evidence.
The eventual arrest demonstrates why video evidence, witness accounts and follow-up interviews can be important in cases where the full circumstances are not immediately clear.
WHEN A VEHICLE BECOMES PART OF AN ASSAULT ALLEGATION
The phrase "deadly weapon" may lead some readers to think immediately of a firearm or knife.
But in criminal cases, vehicles can also become central to assault allegations depending on how they are allegedly used and the applicable law.
In this case, authorities accused Kalthof of using her SUV in a manner that caused the teenager to fear for his safety.
That does not mean the charge itself proves what happened.
It represents the allegation authorities decided was supported sufficiently to make an arrest. The legal process determines whether criminal accusations are ultimately proven.
This distinction matters when discussing any bodycam or arrest footage.
AN ARREST IS NOT A CONVICTION, AND A PERSON FACING CRIMINAL CHARGES IS PRESUMED INNOCENT UNLESS PROVEN GUILTY.
THE E-BIKE DEBATE SURROUNDING THE CASE
The incident also occurred against a broader debate about electric bicycles in Florida communities.
E-bikes have grown rapidly in popularity because they provide a relatively accessible way to travel without a traditional motorcycle or automobile.
But their speed and increasing presence on sidewalks, bike paths and neighborhood roads have also produced disputes over safety and regulation.
Flagler County Sheriff Rick Staly discussed those broader concerns after the incident and said he wanted stronger rules surrounding e-bike use, particularly regarding how riders use sidewalks, trails and intersections.
However, the Sheriff's Office's account of this particular case did not present the teenager's riding as justification for the alleged pursuit.
FlaglerLive specifically reported that the boy had not committed an infraction in connection with the incident.
That creates an important distinction.
Concerns about e-bike safety can be debated separately from the question of how an individual should respond when they believe a rider is behaving irresponsibly.

BODYCAM FOOTAGE ADDS ANOTHER PERSPECTIVE
Cases like this illustrate why police body-worn cameras have become such an important source of information in modern law-enforcement stories.
A news article can summarize the allegations.
A police report can document statements.
A witness video can capture the incident itself.
But bodycam footage can reveal what happened when deputies later spoke with the people involved.
It may capture explanations, questions, reactions and details that are difficult to communicate through a written summary alone.
At the same time, bodycam video should not automatically be treated as a complete record.
A camera records only what falls within its field of view and only during the period when it is recording.
For that reason, the strongest understanding of an incident often comes from comparing bodycam footage with witness recordings, official reports and other available evidence.
WHY THIS CASE ATTRACTED SO MUCH ATTENTION
The story contains several elements that immediately stand out.
There is a teenager riding an e-bike.
There is an SUV allegedly following him onto a path where ordinary vehicles are not supposed to be traveling.
There is a frightened young rider attempting to get away.
There is a stranger who recognizes the danger and intervenes.
Then there is a police investigation that eventually leads to an arrest.
But perhaps the most striking aspect is the apparent difference between the alleged motivation and the potential consequences.
According to authorities, the confrontation began because Kalthof believed the teenager was riding too fast and wanted to speak with his parents.
Yet investigators allege that the attempt to pursue him created a far more dangerous situation than the behavior she was supposedly trying to address.
That contradiction is one reason the footage spread widely online.
THE IMPORTANCE OF THIRD-PARTY VIDEO
This case also demonstrates how much modern investigations can depend on ordinary people recording unexpected events.
Years ago, an incident like this might have depended largely on statements from the driver, teenager and witnesses.
Today, smartphones can preserve crucial moments almost immediately.
The teenager reportedly recorded the SUV behind him.
A nearby witness's girlfriend also recorded part of the encounter.
Law enforcement could then compare those recordings with witness accounts and statements from the people involved.
Video does not eliminate the need for investigation, but it can provide investigators with information that would otherwise be difficult to reconstruct.

A FRIGHTENING ENCOUNTER WITH A SAFE ENDING
Fortunately, the teenager was able to get away.
The witness's decision to intervene appears to have played an important role in ending the alleged pursuit.
The case then moved from the bike path into the criminal justice system.
Investigators gathered evidence, an arrest was made, and the allegations became a matter for the courts.
For viewers, the footage is dramatic.
For the people involved, however, this was not entertainment.
A teenager reported being frightened while trying to escape a vehicle. A motorist felt the situation was serious enough to place his own vehicle between the teenager and the SUV. And a woman ultimately found herself facing criminal charges.
Those realities are worth remembering when watching viral police footage.
WHAT THIS INCIDENT CAN TEACH US
There is a broader lesson in this unusual encounter.
People encounter behavior they dislike on public roads every day.
A cyclist may travel too quickly.
A driver may cut someone off.
A pedestrian may cross unexpectedly.
An e-bike rider may frustrate someone behind the wheel.
But attempting to personally chase, intimidate or confront another road user can transform a minor disagreement into a potentially dangerous incident.
The safer option is generally to disengage and, when genuinely necessary, report dangerous behavior to the appropriate authorities rather than creating a second hazard.
This incident also demonstrates why bystanders can sometimes make a major difference.
The witness who intervened did not simply observe what was happening.
According to investigators, he recognized that the teenager appeared to need help and took action to stop the SUV from continuing.
His information then assisted deputies in identifying the vehicle involved.
FROM VIRAL CLIP TO COMPLETE STORY
A short video circulating online might show only an SUV behind an e-bike.
Another clip might show only a police officer speaking with a woman.
Without context, neither necessarily explains the entire story.
The full sequence is more complicated.
It begins with a teenager riding through Palm Coast.
It develops into an alleged vehicle pursuit along a multi-use path.
A witness intervenes.
Police investigate.
Video from multiple sources becomes evidence.
And days later, an arrest follows.
That timeline demonstrates why WATCHING ONLY THE MOST DRAMATIC FEW SECONDS CAN LEAVE OUT IMPORTANT CONTEXT.
Police bodycam footage, witness recordings, official statements and local reporting can each reveal different parts of the same event.
THE STORY DOESN'T END WITH THE BODYCAM
The encounter attracted attention because of the extraordinary footage, but the most important question is not simply what appears in one viral clip.
It is how the entire situation unfolded.
What did the teenager see as the SUV came closer?
What did witnesses observe?
Why did a stranger decide he needed to block the vehicle?
What explanation was given when law enforcement became involved?
And how did investigators move from an unusual complaint to criminal charges?
Those details turn a brief viral moment into a much larger story about road safety, e-bikes, personal confrontation, citizen intervention and police investigation.
