Female Cop Makes a Mistake That Ends Her Career

A routine call at a Florida apartment complex turned into a highly controversial police encounter after an officer drew her firearm on a man who said he had called 911 for help. The incident was captured on body-camera and surveillance footage, and the officer's actions eventually led to her termination. However, the later legal and employment history makes the story more complicated than the original headline suggests.

A Call for Help Takes an Unexpected Turn

On May 9, 2023, Ryan Gould was swimming at a community pool in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, when he became involved in a dispute with another swimmer. According to the federal appeals court's account, the woman's husband arrived and showed Gould a firearm. Gould then left the pool area and called 911 to report what he said was a threat involving a gun.

When Officer Bethany Guerriero arrived, she encountered Gould, who was wearing only swim trunks. The situation quickly became tense as officers tried to determine what had happened and who was allegedly armed.

The Officer Draws Her Weapon

Body-camera and surveillance footage became central to the later legal proceedings. According to the Eleventh Circuit, Guerriero ordered Gould to keep his hands out of his pockets. Gould nevertheless reached into his swimsuit pocket and pulled out his cellphone.

The officer then ordered him to put the phone down. Gould argued with her and said that he was not the person carrying a gun. Moments later, Guerriero drew her firearm and ordered him to get on the ground.

Gould complied, and the officer holstered her weapon before handcuffing him.

A Heated Exchange Follows

The situation did not end when Gould was restrained. The court record describes a heated exchange between Gould and Guerriero, with Gould continuing to protest the detention and the officer maintaining that he had failed to follow her commands. Other officers eventually became involved and Gould was transported to jail.

Gould was ultimately released without charges. He later filed a federal lawsuit alleging excessive force and false arrest.

The Bodycam Footage Became Crucial Evidence

One of the most important aspects of the case was that investigators and later courts had access to multiple sources of evidence, including body-camera footage, surveillance video and the original 911 calls. The Eleventh Circuit specifically noted that much of the factual record came from these recordings.

The footage allowed investigators to compare what was said by the people involved with what could actually be seen during the encounter. This became particularly important when questions arose about whether Gould posed an immediate threat.

The Department Fires the Officer

The incident triggered an internal affairs investigation by the Palm Beach Gardens Police Department. The department announced in August 2023 that the investigation had concluded Guerriero violated several department policies and that her employment was terminated.

That decision appeared to bring an end to a police career that had lasted many years. Reports at the time also examined previous disciplinary matters in her personnel record, as well as earlier instances in which she had received commendations for helping people.

The Career Ending Was Not Permanent

There is an important update that changes the picture presented by the headline. In 2024, Guerriero was reinstated following arbitration, according to the police union and local reporting.

So while the incident did result in her termination, it did not permanently end her employment with the department. This distinction is important when describing what ultimately happened to her career.

The Lawsuit Reaches Federal Court

Gould's lawsuit argued that the officer used excessive force and falsely arrested him. In May 2025, however, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit affirmed the lower court's decision in favor of Guerriero.

The appellate court concluded that Gould had disregarded several commands before Guerriero drew her weapon. The court also found that there was probable cause supporting the arrest, which defeated his false-arrest claim.

This ruling did not erase the department's earlier disciplinary decision, but it did establish an important legal outcome concerning Gould's civil claims.

One Mistake, Years of Consequences

The case demonstrates how quickly a police encounter can become a major professional and legal controversy. A call involving a reported firearm, a misunderstanding over who was armed, conflicting perceptions of the situation and a drawn weapon ultimately produced an internal investigation, termination, arbitration and federal litigation.

The body-camera footage also shows why recordings have become such an important part of modern policing. What begins as a short interaction on the street can later become evidence examined by police investigators, attorneys and federal judges.

The Story Is More Complicated Than the Headline

The title “Female Cop Makes a Mistake That Ends Her Career” captures the dramatic beginning of the story, but the documented record adds an important qualification: Guerriero was fired after the incident, then later reinstated through arbitration. The federal courts also ultimately ruled against Gould's civil claims.

What remains is a striking example of how one decision during a tense police encounter can trigger consequences far beyond the original call — affecting the person detained, the officer involved and the police department itself.
