Fan Tased by Police After Threatening Officer at Georgia-Florida Game

A College Football Game Turns Chaotic

What should have been a routine day of college football became a tense police encounter during the 2024 Georgia-Florida game at EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville. Videos from the stadium showed officers using force against several fans, prompting widespread attention online.

Officers Are Called to Remove a Fan

According to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office, officers were assisting stadium security after a fan was told to leave. Authorities said the man, identified as Walter Brown, had pushed and threatened a stadium worker after an earlier dispute involving his children and ticket access.

Body-camera footage later released by police showed officers attempting multiple times to get Brown to leave before the situation escalated.

The Situation Quickly Becomes Confrontational

The encounter became more serious when, according to police, Brown threatened an officer and later reached toward the officer's firearm. Authorities also said Brown made a death threat and used racial slurs toward the officer.

The image captures the crowded stadium environment where the confrontation unfolded, with other spectators seated only a short distance away.

Police Use a Taser

After repeated commands and continued resistance, officers used a Taser on Brown. Cellphone footage showed him being shocked and pushed into the stands, while later body-camera footage provided additional context about what happened beforehand.

The incident became particularly controversial because the first videos circulating online did not show the entire interaction. Several witnesses criticized the officers' use of force, while police later released additional footage explaining their account of the encounter.

Bodycam Footage Changes the Picture

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said its review found that the officers involved did not violate department policy. Officials emphasized that the edited social-media clips did not show all of the events leading up to the use of force.

The footage reportedly showed officers trying to remove Brown from the stadium before the confrontation became physical.

A Chaotic Scene at the Game

The incident involving Brown was one of two separate confrontations between police and fans during the game. In the other incident, three people were reportedly asked to leave after aggressive behavior and later became involved in a physical struggle with officers.

The sheriff's office said six officers were injured during incidents at the game, adding to the tense atmosphere surrounding the arrests.

What the Footage Reveals

The incident demonstrates why short clips from large public confrontations can leave out important context. Initial videos prompted criticism from some spectators, while the subsequently released body-camera footage provided police with an opportunity to explain what happened before the Taser was deployed.

What began as a dispute inside a packed football stadium ultimately ended with an arrest and a much larger debate over the events captured on camera.
