Bodycam footage

1. HE THOUGHT HE WAS IN CONTROL

What begins as a confrontation in Alton, Illinois, quickly turns into a chaotic struggle on the sidewalk. In the footage, a man is seen fighting with Alton police officers as they attempt to take him into custody.

The bodycam timestamp identifies the incident as September 25, 2024. The case later became the subject of a federal civil-rights lawsuit involving the arrest. (Justia Dockets & Filings)

2. THE ENCOUNTER STARTED AT A SPORTING-GOODS STORE

According to a 2026 federal court filing, William A. Lester had attempted to enter a Hibbett Sports store while pulling a suitcase. Employees prevented him from entering, after which the complaint says he became disoriented and walked into a busy intersection. (Justia Dockets & Filings)

3. THEN POLICE MOVED IN

The court record says Alton officers encountered Lester after he entered the intersection. According to his later complaint, officers used Tasers from behind, causing him to fall.

The footage itself shows just how quickly the encounter became physical.

4. THE STRUGGLE HIT THE GROUND

In the bodycam footage, the man ends up on the pavement with officers trying to control his movements.

The federal complaint identifies two officers, J. Krankel and P. Gattuso, as participants in the arrest. Lester later alleged that he suffered a shoulder injury during the struggle. Those allegations remain claims made in the lawsuit. (Justia Dockets & Filings)

5. OFFICERS FOUGHT TO GET HIS HANDS UNDER CONTROL

As the struggle continued, officers attempted to restrain him and place him under arrest.

The court filing says Lester alleged that one officer pressed Taser prongs against his chest while another restrained his legs. The allegations were sufficient for the federal court to allow excessive-force claims against the two named officers to proceed past preliminary screening. (Justia Dockets & Filings)

6. THE ARREST DIDN'T END ON THE SIDEWALK

Getting the suspect into custody was only part of the encounter.

According to the complaint, another officer later transported Lester to the Alton Police Department. Lester alleged that his foot was injured when the squad-car door was closed on it. The court allowed that claim to proceed as well. (Justia Dockets & Filings)

7. THEN THE STORY TOOK ANOTHER TURN

The case did not simply disappear after the arrest.

In April 2026, U.S. District Judge J. Phil Gilbert ruled that Lester's excessive-force claims against Officers Krankel and Gattuso could continue. A claim concerning an unnamed officer and the squad-car incident was also allowed to proceed. (Justia Dockets & Filings)

8. BUT ONE PART OF THE LAWSUIT WAS DISMISSED

There was an important distinction in the court's decision.

Lester also claimed officers failed to provide medical care for his injuries. The court dismissed that portion without prejudice because, according to the complaint, officers had offered him transportation to a hospital and he declined it. (Casemine)

9. WHAT LOOKED LIKE A QUICK ARREST BECAME A COURT CASE

What viewers see in the bodycam is only one moment. The later court record shows that the September 2024 arrest eventually became part of a federal lawsuit.

The April 21, 2026 order did not make a final finding that the officers were liable. Instead, it determined which claims could move forward at the preliminary-review stage. (Justia Dockets & Filings)

The original video was published by Be Fascinated on August 16, 2025, under the same title: “When Entitled Man Tries to Show Cops Who's Boss, Ends Badly For Him.” (YouTube)

The video description uses dramatic language such as “instant karma,” but those are the video's own characterizations. The underlying federal court record provides a more detailed account of the September 25, 2024 arrest and the later lawsuit. (YouTube)
