Bully Gets What She Deserves After Terrorizing Autistic Child
GUNFIRE ERUPTS INSIDE LAKEWOOD CHURCH AS OFF-DUTY OFFICERS RUSH TOWARD THE SHOOTER
On February 11, 2024, an ordinary Sunday afternoon at Lakewood Church in Houston suddenly became an active-shooter emergency.
Authorities said 36-year-old Genesse Ivonne Moreno entered the church with her 7-year-old son and an AR-style rifle. She began firing inside the building shortly before a Spanish-language service. Two off-duty law-enforcement officers working security confronted her.
The image you supplied is consistent with the type of police bodycam footage released after the shooting: officers moving through the church with weapons drawn while trying to locate and stop the attacker.
WITHIN MINUTES, A PLACE OF WORSHIP BECAME THE SCENE OF AN ARMED CONFRONTATION.
1. MORENO ARRIVES AT LAKEWOOD CHURCH WITH HER SON
Security footage documented Moreno arriving at the property in a white SUV.
Her 7-year-old son was with her.
Police said she removed the child and a bag from the vehicle before approaching the building. She was wearing a long trench coat, which investigators said concealed the AR-style rifle.
At this point, people inside the church were still going about their normal activities.
NO ONE AROUND THEM COULD HAVE KNOWN HOW QUICKLY THE SITUATION WAS ABOUT TO CHANGE.
2. THE ARMED WOMAN ENTERS THE CHURCH
Surveillance footage showed Moreno walking through the church while carrying the rifle and holding her son's hand.
According to police, she attempted to reach the main sanctuary, but its entrance doors were locked.
The church's fixed cameras captured an eerie transition.
People can initially be seen behaving normally.
Then the first gunshot is heard.
People react.
More shots follow.
Within seconds, adults and children begin running and seeking cover.
THE FIRST GUNSHOT TRANSFORMED THE ENTIRE BUILDING.
3. PEOPLE RUN AS GUNFIRE ECHOES THROUGH THE BUILDING
Lakewood Church is enormous, and the acoustics inside made the shooting especially confusing.
Gunshots echoed through hallways and open spaces.
Security footage showed people scrambling for safety as Moreno moved through the building.
Some ran into rooms.
Others moved down corridors.
People who could not immediately determine where the shooter was had to decide where to hide.
ABC13's review of the footage showed people talking normally before suddenly reacting to the first shot, followed by rapid gunfire.
THE PEOPLE INSIDE DID NOT HAVE TIME TO UNDERSTAND WHAT WAS HAPPENING — THEY SIMPLY HAD TO MOVE.
4. OFF-DUTY OFFICERS RUN TOWARD THE SHOOTING
Two off-duty law-enforcement officers were working security at Lakewood Church.
One was with the Houston Police Department.
The other was Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission Agent Adrian Herrera.
When the shooting began, their movement was opposite to that of the crowd.
People were running away from the shots.
THE OFFICERS MOVED TOWARD THEM.
Bodycam released afterward captured officers moving through the church with their handguns drawn while gunfire reverberated through the enormous building.
CBS reported that the footage showed adults and children fleeing as officers advanced toward the source of the shots.
5. OFFICERS COME FACE-TO-FACE WITH THE ARMED SHOOTER
The officers eventually located Moreno.
Bodycam recorded officers attempting to stop her.
One can be heard ordering:
“PUT THE WEAPON DOWN, NOW.”
Gunfire followed.
The footage captures officers crouching and repositioning while repeatedly trying to determine exactly where Moreno was located.
This was especially difficult because Moreno's young son remained nearby.
The officers therefore faced an armed adult while simultaneously having a child dangerously close to the confrontation.
EVERY ROUND FIRED INSIDE THAT BUILDING CARRIED AN ENORMOUS RISK.
6. THE SHOOTOUT INTENSIFIES
The encounter developed into an exchange of gunfire.
The off-duty Houston officer engaged Moreno.
Herrera also moved toward the confrontation and fired after police said Moreno refused commands to drop her weapon.
The bodycam perspective conveys something that photographs of the aftermath cannot.
Gunshots are extremely loud indoors.
The officers are moving.
Other people remain inside the building.
Walls and corridors restrict visibility.
And the officers cannot necessarily see everything that the cameras eventually reveal to investigators.
THE ENTIRE CONFRONTATION WAS DEVELOPING AT CLOSE RANGE INSIDE A BUILDING FILLED WITH PEOPLE.
7. MORENO THREATENS TO BLOW UP THE CHURCH
Then another threat emerged.
During the confrontation, Moreno claimed she had a bomb and threatened to blow up the church.
One officer can be heard warning others:
“SHE MAY HAVE A BOMB.”
That claim dramatically complicated the response.
Even if officers stopped the shooter, they could not immediately assume the emergency was finished.
Police had to consider whether an explosive device might be inside Moreno's bag, vehicle or elsewhere in the church.
The bomb squad subsequently searched her belongings and vehicle.
NO EXPLOSIVES WERE FOUND.
But the officers confronting her had no way of knowing that at the time.
8. HER 7-YEAR-OLD SON IS SHOT
The most devastating consequence of the confrontation involved Moreno's own child.
Her 7-year-old son was struck in the head by gunfire and critically wounded.
Authorities initially said they had not established whose round struck him.
The released footage shows the urgency immediately afterward.
Officers call for medical assistance.
One officer can be heard praying over the critically wounded child.
A separate man inside the church was also shot and survived. Houston Police later corrected his age to 47.
THE CHILD WHO HAD ENTERED THE CHURCH HOLDING HIS MOTHER'S HAND WAS NOW FIGHTING FOR HIS LIFE.
9. THE SHOOTER IS DOWN, BUT THE CHURCH STILL HAS TO BE CLEARED
Moreno was ultimately struck during the confrontation and pronounced dead at the scene.
But the shooting ending did not automatically make the enormous complex safe.
Officers still had to investigate the bomb threat.
They had to determine whether another shooter might exist.
Rooms and hallways needed to be cleared.
Medical personnel needed access to the injured.
And thousands of people had to be kept away from the active investigation.
Images from outside Lakewood Church showed the enormous law-enforcement response that developed around the building.
THE GUNFIGHT LASTED MINUTES. SECURING AND INVESTIGATING THE SCENE TOOK FAR LONGER.
10. BODYCAM AND SECURITY FOOTAGE REVEAL THE COMPLETE SEQUENCE
Houston authorities released the surveillance and body-camera recordings roughly two weeks after the attack.
The different cameras reveal completely different pieces of the incident.
Security footage shows Moreno arriving.
Other cameras show her moving through the building.
Bodycam captures the officers hearing the shots and moving toward them.
Additional footage records the confrontation and its immediate aftermath.
Together, the recordings establish a disturbing sequence:
MORENO ARRIVED WITH HER 7-YEAR-OLD SON.
SHE ENTERED LAKEWOOD CHURCH ARMED WITH AN AR-STYLE RIFLE.
THE FIRST SHOTS SENT PEOPLE RUNNING FOR COVER.
