Armed Robbery Suspect Flees Traffic Stop — Chase Takes a Wild Turn
A routine attempt to stop a vehicle linked to an armed robbery quickly escalated into a dangerous police pursuit through San Francisco. What followed involved a crash, gunfire, an injured officer, and a desperate attempt by the driver to escape on foot.
THE TRAFFIC STOP QUICKLY ESCALATES
On May 31, 2026, San Francisco police received an alert about a vehicle associated with an armed robbery entering the city from the Bay Bridge. Officers located a gray Toyota Camry near Fifth Street and Folsom Street and began coordinating a high-risk traffic stop.
When officers attempted to stop the vehicle near Mission Street and First Street, THE DRIVER REFUSED TO COMPLY AND IMMEDIATELY FLED. Officers then pursued the vehicle through several San Francisco neighborhoods.
THE PURSUIT ENDS IN A CRASH
The chase eventually reached Bayshore Boulevard. At approximately 10:45 p.m., the suspect vehicle struck a concrete barrier near Jerrold Avenue and became disabled.
Officers surrounded the vehicle and ordered the occupants to exit with their hands up. Instead, according to SFPD, THE DRIVER EXITED AND OPENED FIRE ON POLICE.
Officers returned fire during the confrontation. One San Francisco police officer was struck by gunfire, while the passenger of the suspect vehicle was also injured. Both were transported to a hospital for treatment.
SUSPECT RUNS FROM THE CRASH
Despite the crash and exchange of gunfire, the driver managed to escape from the immediate scene on foot. Officers established a perimeter and began searching the surrounding area.
The search continued until police received information that the suspect had entered the fenced area of the Bayshore Navigation Center shortly after midnight. Officers responded and located him there. THE SUSPECT WAS TAKEN INTO CUSTODY WITHOUT FURTHER INCIDENT.
TWO FIREARMS RECOVERED
Police identified the suspect as 36-year-old Norris Reed III of Oakland. SFPD reported that officers recovered two firearms from his waistband during the arrest, including a Glock 23 and a privately manufactured 9mm handgun.
The case resulted in numerous charges, including attempted murder, assault with a firearm on police officers, reckless evading, and multiple firearm-related offenses. SFPD noted that the investigation remained active and that the information could change as additional evidence was reviewed.
