19-Year-Old Wanted Fugitive Rams Police, Gets Taken Down in a Deadly Police Shootout Moments Later
UNMAN OPENS FIRE ON RESPONDING POLICE — BODYCAM CAPTURES A TERRIFYING DAYLIGHT SHOOTOUT
The supplied frame appears consistent with footage from the February 24, 2022 Monroeville, Alabama shooting involving Broderick Tramaine Young. In that incident, officers responding to a shooting call came under rifle fire almost immediately after arriving. Incoming rounds shattered windows on multiple patrol vehicles, while officers returned fire and attempted to reach an injured teenager.
Federal court records and the U.S. Attorney's Office later established that Young used a 5.56mm semiautomatic rifle during the confrontation. Four police vehicles were struck, two officers suffered non-life-threatening injuries from debris or shrapnel, and a 15-year-old who had been shot before police arrived suffered life-threatening injuries.
THE OFFICERS ARRIVED EXPECTING TO HELP A SHOOTING VICTIM — AND ALMOST IMMEDIATELY FOUND THEMSELVES UNDER FIRE.
1. A SHOOTING CALL BRINGS POLICE TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD
At approximately 3:05 p.m. on February 24, 2022, Monroeville police responded to the area of Bartley Avenue following reports of a shooting and a person suffering from a gunshot wound.
Authorities later identified the armed man as Broderick Tramaine Young.
The federal case established that a 15-year-old had been struck in the abdomen by a round fired through the front of a house. The teenager suffered life-threatening injuries and ultimately required helicopter transportation, surgery and extensive hospital treatment.
The officers therefore entered the neighborhood knowing somebody had already been seriously wounded.
What they did not know was how quickly the shooter would turn his attention toward them.
THE FIRST RESPONDERS WERE DRIVING INTO AN ACTIVE SHOOTING SCENE.
2. THE GUNMAN OPENS FIRE AS POLICE ARRIVE
According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Young began firing toward responding officers as several police vehicles approached.
The weapon was described in federal proceedings as a 5.56mm-caliber semiautomatic rifle. Court records state that armor-piercing ammunition was involved.
FOX10's reporting on the bodycam footage shows how little time officers had to react.
Officer Ellis Manuel arrived and immediately encountered gunfire. Another officer, John Green, engaged Young from a different position.
The officers had driven into what had suddenly become a rifle attack.
THERE WAS ALMOST NO TRANSITION BETWEEN ARRIVAL AND GUNFIRE.
3. BULLETS STRIKE THE POLICE VEHICLES
The intensity of the shooting can be measured by what happened to the police vehicles.
Initial reporting said AT LEAST FOUR MONROEVILLE POLICE CARS WERE HIT BY GUNFIRE.
Windows shattered as rounds struck the vehicles.
This mattered for more than property damage.
The patrol cars were simultaneously transportation, potential cover and obstacles restricting where the officers could move.
A rifle round striking a window can instantly fill the cabin with fragments of glass and other debris.
FOX10 reported that debris from the shooting injured one officer's neck and eye badly enough to require surgery, while glass fragments also became embedded in Officer Manuel's hand.
THE POLICE VEHICLES WERE NOT SIMPLY NEAR THE GUNFIGHT — THEY WERE BEING HIT BY IT.
4. THE DRIVER'S-SIDE WINDOW SHATTERS
This is where the supplied screenshot becomes especially significant.
FOX10's description of the released footage states that incoming fire shattered Officer John Green's driver's-side window while he was engaging the shooter.
The supplied frame shows exactly the kind of chaos such a hit creates.
The glass beside the officer is fractured.
Visibility outside the vehicle has been compromised.
The officer has his handgun raised.
A residential house and vehicle are only a short distance away.
At this point, the patrol car itself was no longer providing the separation officers might normally expect from an armed person.
RIFLE FIRE HAD REACHED DIRECTLY INTO THE OFFICER'S POSITION.
5. OFFICERS SCRAMBLE FOR COVER
Bodycam footage described by FOX10 showed Officer Manuel quickly abandoning his exposed position and moving behind his patrol vehicle.
Officer Green also had to reposition after incoming rounds shattered his window.
FOX10 reported that Green crawled along the ground and used the vehicle for cover before firing two rounds from his sidearm.
This is one of the reasons the footage is so striking.
There was no controlled perimeter.
There was no long standoff before shots were exchanged.
Officers were trying to determine where the rounds were coming from while simultaneously protecting themselves and responding to the shooter.
SECONDS AFTER ARRIVING, OFFICERS WERE ON THE GROUND USING THEIR VEHICLES AS COVER.
6. POLICE RETURN FIRE
Officers returned fire during the confrontation.
The federal appellate record later specifically identified John Green Jr. as the officer who returned fire against Young. Green also testified during the federal proceedings about the confrontation.
The court record states that the responding officers arrived in marked police vehicles with emergency lights and sirens, a fact considered when evaluating whether Young knew he was firing toward law enforcement.
Despite the volume of gunfire, none of the officers was struck directly by a bullet.
But two sustained non-life-threatening injuries from shrapnel or debris.
THE OFFICERS HAD SURVIVED THE INITIAL VOLLEY, BUT THE SHOOTER STILL HAD TO BE TAKEN INTO CUSTODY.
7. A TEENAGER IS STILL WAITING FOR MEDICAL HELP
The gun battle created another urgent problem.
Police had originally been dispatched because someone had already been shot.
Federal prosecutors said the teenage victim suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen after a rifle round was fired through the front of a residence.
Emergency responders needed access to that victim.
But sending paramedics into an area where rifle fire was still being directed toward police would have created another enormous risk.
Officers therefore had to deal with the armed threat while simultaneously trying to make the area safe enough for medical personnel.
The teenager ultimately required HELICOPTER TRANSPORT TO A HOSPITAL, SURGERY AND EXTENSIVE INPATIENT TRAUMA CARE.
WHILE POLICE WERE FIGHTING TO PROTECT THEMSELVES, ANOTHER PERSON WAS ALREADY FIGHTING FOR HIS LIFE.
8. OFFICERS MOVE IN AND TAKE YOUNG INTO CUSTODY
The confrontation eventually shifted in the officers' favor.
FOX10's account of the bodycam footage describes Officer Manuel moving toward Young with his handgun drawn and eventually taking possession of the rifle while Young was positioned face-down.
Officers then placed Young in handcuffs.
Even after he had been restrained, footage reportedly showed officers dealing with continued resistance while attempting to place him inside a patrol vehicle.
Remarkably, police put him into one of the same patrol vehicles damaged during the exchange of gunfire.
The active gun battle was finally over.
But officers still had to clear the surrounding area.
9. POLICE SEARCH THE HOUSE AND SECURE THE SCENE
After Young was detained, officers approached the residence cautiously.
Bodycam described by FOX10 captured officers announcing themselves and repeatedly ordering anyone inside to show their hands and come outside.
They could not simply assume that arresting one person meant every threat had disappeared.
Investigators then had to document an unusually large shooting scene.
There were damaged patrol vehicles.
There was the rifle.
There were fired rounds and impact points.
A teenager had been wounded.
Officers had exchanged fire with Young.
And several different body cameras potentially recorded different portions of the confrontation.
THE GUNFIGHT LASTED ONLY A SHORT TIME. RECONSTRUCTING IT WOULD TAKE FAR LONGER.
10. BODYCAM LATER BECOMES KEY EVIDENCE IN THE CASE
The legal consequences continued long after the shooting scene had been cleared.
Federal prosecutors charged Young because he was prohibited from possessing a firearm. In September 2023, a federal judge imposed the statutory maximum sentence of 120 months in prison.
The bodycam footage was significant enough that prosecutors played the recordings during Young's federal sentencing hearing.
Young subsequently challenged aspects of his sentence.
In January 2025, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit affirmed the sentence. The appellate decision recounted that Young had shot a teenager and then opened fire toward arriving officers with a semiautomatic rifle. It also noted that two officers suffered non-life-threatening injuries from shrapnel.
The federal proceedings also examined Young's mental state. The district court ultimately treated the underlying conduct for sentencing purposes as assault with intent to commit second-degree murder rather than attempted first-degree murder, while retaining an enhancement related to assaulting law-enforcement officers.
The supplied screenshot therefore represents only a fraction of a much larger event.
A TEENAGER HAD ALREADY BEEN SHOT.
POLICE ARRIVED TO HELP.
RIFLE FIRE WAS DIRECTED TOWARD THE RESPONDING OFFICERS.
MULTIPLE PATROL VEHICLES WERE HIT.
WINDOWS SHATTERED AROUND THE OFFICERS.
TWO OFFICERS SUFFERED INJURIES FROM THE GUNFIRE AND DEBRIS.
POLICE RETURNED FIRE.
THE ARMED MAN WAS EVENTUALLY TAKEN INTO CUSTODY.
AND THE TEENAGE VICTIM SURVIVED AFTER EMERGENCY SURGERY AND EXTENSIVE MEDICAL TREATMENT.
What makes the bodycam footage so intense is its perspective. Viewers do not see the confrontation from a distant news helicopter. They see shattered glass directly beside the officer while rounds are striking police vehicles.
THE FRAME YOU PROVIDED CAPTURES THE MOMENT A ROUTINE POLICE RESPONSE HAD ALREADY TRANSFORMED INTO A CLOSE-RANGE BATTLE FOR SURVIVAL.
